Is it possible to visit Amiens without noticing the majestic silhouette of its cathedral? With its spire rising 112 m into the air, Notre-Dame d’Amiens has become the real symbol of the capital of Picardy. Classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts thousands of tourists each year. Our hotel in the heart of Amiens is ideal for visiting the cathedral, just a 5-minute walk away from the grand Gothic monument.
The façade alone is worth a visit. With around 3000 statues and gargoyles of various kinds typical of the 13th century, the building provides attentive visitors with vivid historical insight. Once inside, you’ll have the joy of getting lost under the monumental vaults of the central nave, rising 42 m high and representing one of the most successful examples in the world of “flamboyant” Gothic architecture.
Admiring the cathedral in daytime is fine, but since 1999, during summer and the Christmas markets, the cathedral lights up in the evening in a dazzling 50-minute light and music show full of colour. The latest show “Chroma” has been designed by Michel Pastoureau, historian in colour symbolism.
This free show, already admired by more than 1.8 million visitors, gives new life to the saints, apostles and other figures populating the cathedral.
Amiens Cathedral is open all year long. From 8:30am, to 5:30 pm from 1 October to 31 March and from 8:30 am to 6:30pm from 1 April to 30 September.
